Karumpuli Naal

Observed annually on July 5, Karumpuli Naal (Black Tigers Day) commemorates the Black Tigers, a specialized unit of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam during the Sri Lankan civil war. The date marks July 5, 1987, when Captain Miller carried out the first Black Tiger operation in Nelliady. This event later became a significant moment in the history of the unit. The Black Tigers were known for conducting high risk suicide operations. For many Eelam Tamils, Karumpuli Naal is a day of remembrance dedicated to those who participated in these operations and to reflecting on the sacrifices, experiences, and losses associated with the conflict. As with all periods of war, this history remains complex and deeply emotional.
